Sanitation woes escalate political tensions in Capital

Political tensions within the INDIA bloc intensified in the national capital as Jitender Kumar Kochar, former Leader of the House and Congress in-charge in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), criticised the Mayor of the AAP-led MCD.

Kochar said it was peculiar that one year into AAP's governance, the Mayor suddenly recognised garbage and filth crisis in the city, necessitating urgent action.

Delhi BJP president, Virendra Sachdeva joined the criticism, condemning the MCD's low ranking in the national sanitation survey. Sachdeva accused Arvind Kejriwal's regime of plunging Delhi's sanitation services to its worst.

He added that as of January 2024, the landfill sites remained unchanged, coupled with disappointment from the latest Swachh Bharat Survey results.

Kochar challenged the Mayor's promise of a 50-day cleaning drive, allegedly arguing that mutual conflicts between AAP and the BJP over the past year had left no room for meaningful civic work.

He accused both the parties of betraying the public. He further highlighted the absence of a Standing Committee and Ward Committees during the Municipal Commissioner's budget presentation.

Congress leader Nazia Danish echoed the discontent among the MCD's sanitation workers due to unfulfilled promises. He said there was an urgent need for 50,000 sanitation workers and to address issues of contractual workers. Besides, Danish questioned the feasibility of the Mayor's ambitious 50-day sanitation drive.

Congress spokesperson Anuj Attrey accused the ruling party of neglecting promises made during the MCD elections. He said it had failed to flatten mountains of waste at landfills and address the problems of overflowing drains and accumulated garbage, posing a health hazard.
