New Delhi, February 5

Jailed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh was denied the permission to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member on Monday by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The Chairman mentioned that the matter is currently under consideration by the privileges committee of the Rajya Sabha, which is investigating a breach of privilege case against Singh.

Excise policy case: hearing adjourned

The SC on Monday adjourned the hearing on senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh’s petition challenging his arrest and subsequent remand in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy scam for a month. A Bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna scheduled the next hearing for March 5 after Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the ED, informed the court that the order on Singh’s regular bail plea had been reserved by the Delhi HC on January 31. tns

Singh had sought a seven-day bail to enable him to take the oath as a Rajya Sabha member on February 1. While the Rouse Avenue court did not grant a seven-day bail, it permitted Singh to take the oath on February 5. The court, while extending his judicial custody until February 17, allowed Singh to go to Parliament under police custody at 10 am on Monday to take the oath in the Upper House.

The AAP leader, along with former Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal and ND Gupta, was nominated for the Rajya Sabha. Singh first became a member of the Upper House in 2018 and was elected unopposed for a second term last month.

Delhi Cabinet minister and senior AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj stated, “The Rajya Sabha Chairman is going against the constitutional provisions of the country. Article 99 says the oath should be administered. The matter of privileges was related to his membership, which has already expired. He cannot be denied the oath in his new term.”

“The privileges matter should be decided within 30 days. They keep on delaying it, and they will continue to delay the process. They are just politicising the issue,” he added.
