Bathinda, January 20
Members of the Dal Khalsa and the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) have launched a campaign to garner support for the January 25 ‘Punjab Bandh’ call to protest against the CAA and the NRC.
At a press conference, representatives of these organisations appealed to the people to extend full support and participate in the ‘bandh’.
While the Central Government is determined to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act in the country, Sikh bodies have upped their ante against it by giving a call for Punjab Bandh on the eve of India’s 70th Republic Day.
Addressing a press conference here in Bathinda, members of the Dal Khalsa and Shiromani Akali Dal (A) have appealed the people to keep their shutters down on January 25 to register their protest against the CAA and the NRC.
Harpal Singh Cheema, head of Dal Khalsa, said, “The new law is of both divisive and discriminative nature. There have been brazen attempts at stifling the voice of dissent and quell the voice of protesters by using force against them. But we are firm on our stand and determined to take on the challenge.”
Hardeep Singh Mehraj, vice-president, Dal Khalsa, alleged, “There is a sinister design at place but it will barely serve any purpose. People of the country have come out in open to express their concern over the controversial Act. We vehemently oppose the brutal attack on JNU and Jamia students.”
Dal Khalsa members exhorted people to participate in the bandh call to make it a success. Members of the body clarified that medical facilities, including hospitals and chemist shops, would not be affected by the bandh call.
