Cold wave tightens grip over Hisar, mercury dips to 0.3°C

Schools to remain open; light showers likely from Dec 31 to Jan 2

With the cold wave sweeping the region, the temperature in Hisar saw a steep fall of 6 degrees below normal as the mercury dipped to 0.3°C.

There is no relief for students as the schools opened on Friday and will be functioning on Saturday as well.

Farmers in the Adampur and Nalwa regions of the district, adjoining to Rajasthan, said there was frost in the fields in the morning, indicating that the minimum temperature could be around sub-zero level. Last year too temperature of -1°C was recorded on December 28.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) saidthe maximum temperature recorded during the day was 12.2°C, nine points below normal. However, the IMD forecast indicated that the temperature may go up a few notches in the next few days. It has also predicted light showers from December 31 to January 2 in the region.

Mewa Singh, sarpanch of Budak village located near the Rajasthan border, said he found a layer of frost in the fields on Friday morning. “The breeze is bone-chilling early in the morning. Though sun shines bright around noon, there was no respite from the chill,” he said, adding that farmers were concerned about their cattle. “We have covered the cattle shed with gunny bags and also scattered dry fodder on the ground to keep the cattle warm,” he stated.

District Elementary Education Officer Dhanpat Singh said the winter holidays would start from January 1 and there were no directions from the higher authorities on the break in the ongoing session.

Meanwhile, an expert of the Department of Agriculture Meteorology of the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University said the fall in the temperature would have no adverse impact on wheat and sugarcane. “Though it can have a slightly negative impact no mustard crop, which is in its flowering stage, and vegetables such as potato and tomato,” the expert added.
