Youth killed in hit-and-run

A 19-year-old youth was killed after a speeding Alto car hit him while he was standing near his bike here last night.

The victim has been identified as Vipin Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who was putting up in Sector 82, Mohali. Vipin was working with Punjab Installer Group at JLPL Industrial Park, Sector 82, here.

According to the police, the incident took place near the Sector 68/79 intersection on Airport Road. The victim and his company supervisor, Charanjit Yadav (45), were going towards Sector 82 to Vipin’s room from Homeland Heights, Sector 70, here. They stopped on the way as Charanjit wanted to answer nature’s call. Vipin was waiting for him after parking the bike on the road when a speeding Alto hit him. He sustained multiple injuries. The car driver sped away after the mishap. With the help of passersby, Charanjit took his friend to the Civil Hospital at Phase 6 where doctors declared him brought dead. A passerby managed to note down the registration number of the car. A case has been registered against the car driver under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC at the Phase 8 police station.

The postmortem was conducted today and the body handed over to his family.
