Woman found dead in Chandigarh hotel; police looking for male friend

A 29-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hotel room in Industrial Area Phase-II on Wednesday afternoon, police said. 

The victim, whom police identified as Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Sangrur, had checked into Hotel Sky with a friend Maninder Singh, a resident of Sector 30, Chandigarh, on December 30, police sources said.  

The couple neither ordered anything at the hotel nor called in the housekeeping, the sources said. When the couple, who had the room booked until Wednesday afternoon, did not check out of the hotel as scheduled, the hotel staff knocked at their door but got no answer. A hotel boy identified only as Sumit opened the door using a spare key to find the victim’s lifeless body on the bed.

Police sources said they were looking for Singh, who has been missing since. News agency PTI reported that a CCTV camera footage showed Singh leaving the hotel on December 30 night.

The PTI report quoted police as saying that the victim was a nurse and that Singh had left his job in Chandigarh three months ago.

The hotel manager who did not want to be named said the couple stayed regularly at the hotel, and that their room had been booked using booking app Make My Trip.  

Police sources said a case of murder had been registered.
