Weekly Covid death count in Chandigarh jumps over three times

The number of Covid deaths reported in a week has increased by over three times in the city. While 16 persons died of Covid from November 7 to 13, only five fatalities were reported during the week ending November 6.

Among those who have succumbed to the virus were over 50 years of age and had co-morbid conditions like asthma, diabetes and hypertension. Of late, the city has been reporting over 100 cases a day.

Dr Rajesh Kumar, former head of the Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGI, said, “The trend of increased fatalities indicates that the virus is spreading in the community. There has been an increase in hospitalisation of Covid patients as well. The cases are expected to rise more in the next two weeks. The next two months will be crucial to us to avoid the second peak.” The fatality rate of Chandigarh is currently 1.5 per cent.

Active cases rise 69%

After witnessing a decline in the number of active cases, the city has again started recording an upsurge in the active infections lately. From 593 on November 2, the number of active cases has increased to 1,009, which is an increase of 69 per cent.

Two succumb, 93 test +ve

The city today recorded 93 new cases and two deaths. A 60-year-old man from Dadu Majra and a 66-year-old man from Sector 21died at the PGI. The city also saw 84 recoveries.
