The Punjab State AIDS Control Society and the Punjab State Blood Transfusion Council today honoured 14 voluntary blood donation organisations, which managed over 2,000 units of blood and made them available to blood banks last year.

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu honoured 17 men and 24 women blood donors who donated blood over 100 and 10 times, respectively. Six blood banks, one medical college and six blood component separation units were also honoured on the occasion.

The minister said government hospitals in Punjab were providing free blood facility to patients. There were 132 licensed blood banks in the state. Of this, 46 were run by the government, six by the Army and 80 by private hospitals and institutions.
