Zirakpur: Truckers stage protest, traffic hit for two hours

Show comments

Zirakpur, January 3

Commuters were inconvenienced as the Punjab Truck Union today staged a protest against the state government at the Chhat traffic lights and caused a jam-like situation for close to two hours.

Serpentine queues of vehicles were seen on both sides of the road. Visitors to the airport got late for flights and bus passengers, too, got stuck in the traffic jam. Eyewitnesses said ambulances were also stuck in the traffic jam.

The protesting truckers are demanding the restoration of unions that were dissolved by the Congress government in 2017. The union members, who have been on protest since the start of December last year, said they were in dire straits as there were no official rates and the annual hike of 5-6 per cent was also not being implemented.
