Three Chandigarh-bred athletes prove their mettle

Three city-bred athletes zoomed into the medal rounds in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Jasmine Lamboriya, a pass out from SD College, Sector 32; Sagar Ahlawat, BA-I student at SD College, Sector 32; and Nitu Ghangas, a pass out from Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26; are on a roll.
Boxer Sagar Ahlawat made it to the men’s 92-kg semi-finals. He beat Keddy Evans Agnes of Seychelles.
Sagar (22) said: “It is good feeling to secure a medal, but I am hoping to win the gold. I have come with a lot of preparation and hope. So far, it’s going good.”
The super heavyweight boxer, on his debut multi-discipline international event, will take on Ifeany Onyekwere of Nigeria in his semi-final.
Jasmine Lamboriya (60-kg category) ensured India’s fifth medal from the ring winning her lightweight quarterfinal against New Zealand’s Troy Garton.
Earlier, boxer Nitu Ghangas beat Northern Ireland’s Nicole Clyde in the quarterfinals of the women’s 48-kg category.
Judoka Tulika Maan (23), a pass out from the PU, had won a silver medal after losing to defending champion Sarah Adlington of Scotland in the 78+kg final.
City women cricketers - wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia and all-rounder Harleen Deol - are also having a good time as the team has reached the semi-finals.
