Chandigarh's Sukhna lake floodgates opened after water level nears danger mark

The UT Administration opened the floodgates of Sukhna Lake after its level reached 1,162.54 ft late last night. 

The floodgates were open till Sunday noon as the water level was yet to go down the level of 1162 ft. A few days back the UT administration had issued alert regarding the same.

The danger mark is 1,163 ft, but generally when the water level reaches above 1162ft the gates are opened.

Meanwhile, flood-like situation was averted in the low-lying areas of Baltana and Zirakpur due to low discharge from Sukhna Lake.

Due to the heavy rain in the catchment area, the danger mark has neared in July this year. Last year, the water level had crossed the danger mark in late August. The flood gates last year were opened when the level reached 1,162 ft.

The two floodgates had to be opened in August 2020 after the level of the lake crossed the danger mark. It had caused widespread flooding in the low-lying areas of Zirakpur alongside the Sukhna Choe.

Earlier on September 24, 2018, incessant rain in the catchment area had forced the officials to open the floodgates after a gap of 10 years. The Sukhna Choe carries the excess water of the lake to the Ghaggar river.
