Road in Makhan Majra source of daily harassment for residents, commuters

The gurdwara road in Makhan Majra is a big source of daily harassment for the area residents and other commuters using the stretch.

Scrap dealers sitting illegally on both sides of the road have added to the commuters’ woes. A large number of vehicles, including trucks, arrive here for scrap-related work and are parked on the narrow road leading to long traffic jams.

“The situation becomes worse during rains. As the road is broken and narrow, the water accumulates on the road. It all becomes muddy here. Cars get dirty and so does the clothes of those on two-wheelers,” lamented Ashok Kumar, a local resident.

Mandeep, another resident, said, “The problem is mainly due to a large number of scrap dealers sitting illegally on the public land. People here have complained to the Estate Office and other authorities, but in vain. They must be removed from here.”

Residents rued that there was always a threat of fire at the scrape dealers’ area. “The situation can be uncontrollable if some major fire incident takes place here. There must be some check by the authorities, who thus far have turned a blind eye to the encroachment for the reasons best known to them,” added another resident.

In April last year, a massive fire had broken out at this scrap market.

On the road issue, area councillor Harjit Singh said, “The work of laying water, sewage and storm water pipelines was being done in the area. Due to this, the road is dug up and in a bad condition. Sewage and water pipeline work is already over. Only 30 per cent of the storm water pipeline work is left now. The road repair work will start in about a month.”

On illegal scrap dealers, he said, “I will get it checked and action will be taken against those sitting illegally.”
