Panchkula, January 20

A restaurant owner, who was arrested for duping an Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) official of Rs 7 lakh on the pretext of selling him his food outlet in Mansa Devi Complex (MDC), was sent to three-day police custody today.

Vineet Mahajan, the owner of Chawla Chicken Corner who was on the run for the past 10 months, was arrested from Kharar.

In April last year, victim Sandeep and Mahajan had entered into a deal to sell the latter’s restaurant located in the MDC area. The deal was struck at Rs 10 lakh. Of the total amount, around Rs 7 lakh was paid by the victim in advance.

But Mahajan later refused to sell his restaurant. On the victim’s insistence, he handed over a cheque for Rs 7 lakh to him. The victim accepted the cheque and deposited it in a bank, but it got bounced.

A case was registered against Mahajan under Sector 420 and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code last year. In his complaint to the police, Sandeep had told the police that the suspect also threatened to kill him.

Mahajan was produced in a local court today, which sent him to three-day police custody. Police officials said he would be interrogated about his accomplices involved in the incident.
