Residents want Panchkula MC elections postponed

Panchkula, November 28

Even though the State Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for the Panchkula MC elections soon, residents have written to the election body to postpone the civic body poll due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

The Citizens’ Welfare Association, an apex body of citizens of Panchkula, said representatives of several RWAs in the city were under pressure from senior citizens to request the authorities to defer forthcoming MC elections.

The local polls are expected to take place by the end of this month or early next year.

SK Nayar, president of the CWA, said they had received a number of objections from senior citizens and retired Army professionals living in various sectors on the immediate holding of local body elections amid the pandemic.

Keeping in view their reservations, the CWA had on October 11 convened a meeting of 17 RWAs. The presidents and secretaries of most RWAs were of an opinion that civic elections be postponed and a letter was written to the election body on the issue. — TNS
