Public toilets a mess in markets of Panchkula

Broken urinal pots, leaking roofs, foul smell greet visitors

Visitors to most markets here are a harassed lot, thanks to a poor condition of public toilets. At some public toilet units, doors are broken, while in others, roofs are leaking. With monsoon around, things are going to get worse at these units.

In several toilet units, washbasins are broken and urinal pots have developed cracks.

Despite such poor condition of toilets, no efforts are being made to improve the public conveniences. According to information, there are around 40 public toilets in various markets and 18 of them are in a dilapidated condition

The Chairman of the Mathuradas Lajwant Subhash Hiteshi Foundation, Bharat Hiteshi, stated that even though Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta and Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal were determined to make the city clean and beautiful, the public toilets in sectors 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 15 are in a pathetic condition. He recently visited the Sector 6 market to buy some medicines and had to use the toilet there. Leave aside entering the toilet, it was difficult to stand outside due to the foul smell emanating from the unit, said Hiteshi.

After criticism by residents, Chief Sanitation Inspector Avinash Singla inspected the public toilets and submitted his report to the engineering wing. Singla said the public toilets were not being maintained. Also, civil works were not being carried out properly. He said the engineering wing had floated tenders for the maintenance of the toilets, but many units sans facilities.

He said some of the employees had been put on duty to regularly clean these toilets. Whenever they receive a complaint, they immediately look into it.

Superintending Engineer Vijay Goel said there were around 40 public toilets in various markets of the city. The toilet unit of the Sector 11 market was recently renovated and the other toilets in the city would be renovated on the same lines. Tenders have been allotted for the renovation of around 12 toilets and the work of allotting more tenders was under way.
