Chandigarh, March 11

A 24-year-old girl was bitten by a pit bull at Sector 30 last evening. Following a complaint, the police arrested the dog owner, Prem Chand. A case under Section 289 (negligent conduct with respect to animal) of the IPC was registered in this regard at the Industrial Area police station. The dog owner was later released on bail.

The victim, who had come from Jalandhar to visit her relatives at Sector 30, has been identified as Lovely. According to complainant Renu, her sister Anita and sister’s children had arrived at her house.

On Tuesday evening, Anita’s daughter Lovely went outside to bring her night suit from her car. A ferocious dog, owned by Renu’s neighbour, attacked her. She was bitten on her hand and thigh. In the footage of a CCTV camera installed outside a house, the girl is seen running on the road to save herself as the dog kept chasing and biting her. Later, people from the neighbourhood were seen rushing to save her. The owner controlled the dog and took it inside his house. Local residents rescued the victim and took her to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16.

“Before this, this dog has bitten around five other local residents. Every time, the owner apologises and requests the affected people not to complain. All our locality residents demand this pit bull should not be allowed to be kept here,” said Renu. Residents said the owner did not keep the dog chained.

Another dog owner was held earlier

In July last year, a similar case was reported. The Mullanpur Garibdass police had arrested the owner of two pit bull dogs, who had bitten a youth. She was later released on bail.
