PGI reserves beds for monkeypox cases

The PGI has reserved a few beds for monkeypox cases after four patients were found infected in the country.

“In the wake of the recent advisory for preparedness of the healthcare institutes for management of monkeypox cases, prima facie, the PGI has designated few beds in the communicable diseases ward of the Nehru Hospital and ICU beds in the Nehru Hospital Extension,” reads an official communique from the tertiary care hospital.

Monkeypox being a dermatological infestation, the institute authorities have directed the Department of Dermatology to take the lead for examination and management of such suspected cases. Any patient suspected of having symptoms similar to monkeypox will be directed to the dermatology wing of the institute for examination and required testing.

The Department of Virology of the PGI has been designated for processing samples and issuing reports.

The PGI authorities have also stated that to minimise the disease transmission, cases requiring active management would be admitted while stable patients would be advised home isolation.

The virology department of the institute is sending laboratory samples of suspected monkeypox virus cases consisting of fluids from blood, vesicles and blood to the National Institute of Virology, Pune.

About the disease

Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease that occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa and is occasionally exported to other regions Its symptoms include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, which may lead to a range of medical complications.
