Panchkula, November 22

City shuttler Anupama Upadhyaya finished third in the women’s singles category at the Bahrain International Series, which concluded on Sunday.

Anupama upset top seed Ozge Bayrak of Turkey in the pre-quarterfinals, while she got the better of Stephanie Widjaja of Indonesia in the last-eight contest.

Anupama, though, lost 16-21 15-21 to Indonesian Ayu Cahya Dewi in the semifinals.

Last month, Anupama had won the women’s singles title in the Infosys Foundation India International Challenge Tournament held in Bengaluru.

She had stunned Malvika Bhansod, who has been shortlisted to represent India in the Sudiraman and Uber Cup, on her way to the title.

She had also defeated Riya Mukherjee and Unnati.

“It’s a big achievement. Especially, after coming back from Covid break. It has been an extremely tough year and such finishes inspire me to play well,” said Anupama.
