Out on bail, drug peddler held

Chandigarh: A drug peddler, who was arrested in an NDPS case and was presently out on bail, has been rearrested by the UT police with 1.125 kg of charas. Birbhan (36), a resident of Indira Colony, was nabbed with the charas from the colony. The police said Birbhan was earlier booked in an NDPS Act case at the Mani Majra police station. He was convicted and sentenced to 10-year imprisonment. He was out on bail. TNS

Juvenile ends life in Ambala

Ambala: A juvenile allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at observation home in Ambala City here on Friday. It is learnt that the juvenile was brought here on Thursday from Fatehabad district in connection with a theft case and he allegedly ended his life with the help of a bedsheet. TNS

Blankets given to underprivileged

Chandigarh: Members of NGO “Feed the Soul” decided to celebrate the festival of Makar Sankranti in a unique way by distributing blankets among underprivileged members of society. In view of the harsh winters and the fact that a number of people are not able to afford warm apparels to shield themselves, the NGO decided to contribute to the cause. Lakshmi Dhevi, found of the NGO, New Delhi, said: “As we sit safe away from the harsh cold in our homes, it is indeed difficult to apprehend the agony of those adversely affected by the spine-chilling winter on the streets and slum areas.” TNS

Ex-cricketer’s death mourned

Chandigarh: Office-bearers of the Union Territory Cricket Association (UTCA), Chandigarh, condoled the demise of RP Singh, former cricketer and coach. Singh (54), who was undergoing treatment at a hospital, died following a heart attack on Thursday morning. “In the first season 2019-20 of the UTCA, he was given the responsibility of selector of junior cricketers (U-16 and U-19), which he performed exceptionally well. He was a skilled administrator along with the selector. He has played the role of the venue manager and the venue in-charge for the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali matches,” said UTCA president Sanjay Tandon. Singh, who worked at AG Punjab, had also coached the women’s senior team for almost a decade at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) in Mohali. In his cricketing career, he had represented Panjab University and U-22 teams for Haryana.
