Patiala, November 27

Newly appointed Punjabi University officiating Vice-Chancellor (VC) Ravneet Kaur today joined her office. She was greeted by senior officials of the university. Ravneet Kaur is the Additional Chief Secretary, Forest and Wildlife, Punjab Government. She is a 1998-batch IAS officer.

Ravneet held a special meeting with senior officials and discussed various affairs of the university management. Officials said she also asked about status of university admissions and other important issues.

Representatives of Punjabi University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) also met the officiating VC and raised concern over the financial conditions of the university. They said the university needed grants provided by the state government, which had exponentially come down from 125 per cent in 1991-92 to 33 per cent last year.

Dr Avneet Pal Singh from the Department of Botany and secretary, PUTA, said a delegation of teachers met the officiating VC and discussed all issues of the teaching community at length.

PUTA leaders said the management, including repair and maintenance of university buildings, was affected due to lack of grants. “We have sternly opposed laying-off of employees citing rationalisation,” they added.
