Chandigarh, May 25

The UT Administration today issued a notification to put the hike in water tariff on hold till March 2022.

“In pursuance of the resolution passed by the General House of the Municipal Corporation on October 29, 2020, and to provide relief to the general public due to severe Covid circumstances, the UT Administrator deferred the implementation of the notification issued by the UT Administration on September 11, 2020, pertaining to water tariff for a period up to March 31, 2022,” read a notice issued by Arun Kumar Gupta, Principal Secretary, Local Government.

In September last year, the UT Administration had notified an increase between 50 per cent and 200 per cent depending upon the category of user and water consumption level.

After facing criticism from the Opposition, the MC General House passed a resolution in October last year, with request to the Administration to withdraw the notification and levy the existing charges till the pandemic was over.

Meanwhile, Charanjiv Singh, president, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, said decision of the MC was another step in right direction which would provide some relief to the traders and the city at large.

He thanked Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma, a senior member of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal who had been making every effort to take up the matter with the Administration.
