Chandigarh, October 1

A 1991-batch Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) officer, Dr Suman Singh, today assumed the charge of the Director, Health Services, UT. Prior to her joining here, she was Deputy Director, Vigilance, Punjab.

Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Dr Suman said, “My focus will be on improving health services in the UT, so that every section of the society, especially economically weaker sections and old people, could avail the health facilities in a hassle-free manner,” she said.

She said special stress would be laid on all issues related to Covid-19 management, besides ensuring vaccination to all residents in the UT.

“To combat the possible Covid-19 third wave, the Government of India has already taken many steps and Chandigarh has mostly fulfilled all of these. Vaccination is the key to prevent spread and hospitalisation. Chandigarh has already achieved 100 per cent vaccination of first dose and will soon attain the target for both doses as well,” she added.

While talking of lessons learnt from the second wave, Dr Suman said, “In the second wave, the whole country was caught on the wrong foot. We did not expect Covid-19 cases to rise so high. We are prepared well now, be it availability of oxygen, ICU beds or medicines.”

Dr Suman, who graduated from the Government Medical College, Patiala, in 1989, was deputed in the city for two years from 1993 to 1995. —TNS
