Mohali residents in lurch as food items go out of stock

As shopkeepers and grocery app ran out of stocks, the Mohali administration’s tall claims of providing food and vegetables to residents have fallen flat on the third day in a row.

A list of groceries stores, chemists, vegetable vendors had been issued by the Mohali administration but the residents claimed that either most of the numbers were either switched off or the shop owners replied that they have ran out of stocks.

The residents claimed that the administration also engaged Bhejo.com application where they could orders groceries but the app shows out of stock.

Ranjit Singh, a resident of Sector 69, said the administration had tied up with e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Flipkart but most of the items displayed were stated to be out of stock.

Surjit Singh, a resident of Sector 71, said though they were getting regular supply of milk and vegetables they were not getting any grocery items ordered through apps. He further said that e-commerce companies were selling some items at exorbitant prices thus making them out of the reach of the common man.

SDM Jagdeep Saigal said efforts were on to arrange supply of groceries and vegetables for shopkeepers so that it may be distributed to residents. He further said that Verka is also making efforts to distribute milk at its outlets and added that they have given passes to milkmen to deliver milk at door steps. He said they have also roped in e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Flipkart for providing essential supplies to the people and the supplies would normal from there also as the staff of these companies would bring supplies from the warehouse and deliver the same to the people at their door steps.

DC Girish Dayalan said apart from this, Swiggy would also depute its 400 delivery executives for carrying essential supplies at the doorsteps of the people. He said that in one day Swiggy would undertake 3000-4000 deliveries in the district. This step has been taken in view of keeping people safe in their premises in the wake of threat of the spread of Covid-19 looming large, he added.
