Panchkula, December 11

The man, who had suffered severe injuries after a speeding car ran over a family of five from Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, on a footpath in the Mansa Devi Complex (MDC) area, died at the PGI.

Ranjeet and the other members of his family were sleeping on the pavement near Singh Dwar in the MDC area when a rashly driven car, bearing the registration number, HR03V-2902, ran them over and rammed into a pole.

Investigating officer Ramesh said they handed over the body to the family after post-mortem.

The police have arrested the car driver, identified as Bobby Soni, a resident of the MDC area. He had fled the scene on foot following the accident. The driver apparently lost control over the vehicle after a tyre burst, the police said. The family had arrived in Chandigarh on December 8 by train to sell brooms. The police have impounded the car.

A case has been registered under Sections 279 (rash driving on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life) of the IPC at the MDC station.
