Chandigarh, February 17

For the management of solid waste in the city, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has started the process of repair and overhauling of the existing solid waste processing plant in Sector 25 here.

The MC today invited bids to complete the project, which will cost Rs2.6 crore. An additional amount of Rs3.72 crore has been allocated for the operation and maintenance of the project for a year. The project has been approved by the MC General House.

The repair work will include replacement of conveyor belts, rollers, motors, gear box, primary shredder, trommel, cyclone dust collector, ID fan in dryer, rotary dryer, hot air generator, ballistic separator, trommel in wet waste and the ETP plant. One secondary shredder is being replaced along with repair of other machinery.

At present, about 60-70 metric tonnes of dry waste per day is getting processed, while the city produces about 200 metric tonnes of dry waste daily. The remaining is thrown at the dumping ground. Officers claim that with the new plan, the entire garbage will be processed daily.

The plant was not working properly due to obsolete machinery, said an MC official. With an upgrade of the plant, the MC would be able to process all dry waste being generated in the city.
