Panchkula, January 20

A resident of Panchkula’s Mansa Devi Complex was duped of Rs 1.3 lakh in an online fraud. Rakesh, the victim, claimed to have received an offer for a part-time job through WhatsApp from a stranger who introduced himself as Bhasin. He said the man offered to pay him to Like Instagram posts. Rakesh received Rs 150 for performing the first task. He was then added to a group on Telegram.

According to the complainant, he would be asked to Like Instagram pages in the group. He started investing his money in it. Initially, he invested Rs 1,000. And he received Rs 1,300 in return. After investing his money a couple of times and receiving more money in return, he was tempted to invest more and more of his money. He later invested sums of Rs 30,000 and Rs 1 lakh but got nothing in return, which prompted him to file a complaint with the police.

The Panchkula police have registered a case under Sections 120-B, 419 and 420 of the IPC at the cybercrime police station.
