Chandigarh, January 14

The UT police were left with egg on their face when a Sector 30 resident, who is suspected to have murdered his female friend at a hotel in the Industrial Area, Phase II, and was absconding for the past two weeks, reached the office of a news channel, hardly 50 metres from the hotel where the crime took place, and confessed on camera that he had murdered his friend since she was cheating on him.

Suspicion led to two murders

  • Police sources said Maninder had committed a murder in 2010, since he suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him. His insecurity with the second victim again led to the murder, said a cop.

On getting information about the suspect, Maninder Singh, cops reached the office of the news channel and arrested him while he was giving an interview.

Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Kakra village in Sangrur district, had checked into Hotel Sky with Maninder Singh on December 30. She was later found murdered in room number 301 on the afternoon of January 1. The suspect had left the hotel a few hours later after checking in and was absconding since then.

While the UT police claimed that they were conducting raids in different parts of Punjab, the suspect walked into a news channel’s office in Chandigarh, hardly 3km from the Sector 31 police station where the murder case has been registered against him.

Victim knew he was murder convict

  • Maninder claimed that Sarabjit knew that he was a murder convict. She was still willing to get married to him . They had also purchased some goods to set up a house. The goods were lying at Sarabjit’s PG in Sohana.

In his interview to the channel, Maninder confessed to having committed the murder, since he believed that Sarabjit was cheating on him. He stated that he wanted to marry Sarabjit and her brothers were against inter-caste marriage, following which they had decided to go for court marriage.

The suspect claimed that later, he came to know that Sarabjit used to speak to another man.

On the day of the incident, the duo reportedly had an altercation over the same issue, following which the suspect first strangled her and later slit her neck with a knife.

Maninder is already a murder convict and was presently out on bail.

He had stabbed a girl with whom he was in a relationship, at Karna Lake in Karnal in 2010.

He was released on bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court since his appeal is pending in the court. — TNS
