Three-day Rose Festival off to colourful start

UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit today inaugurated the three-day Rose Festival at the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden in Sector 16 here. As many as 829 varieties of rose have been displayed at the venue.

The zero-waste festival was inaugurated in the presence of MP Kirron Kher, Mayor Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor, UT Adviser Rajeev Verma, Local Government secretary Nitin Kumar Yadav, MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra, area councillor Saurabh Joshi, other councillors, senior officials of the civic body and prominent residents of the City Beautiful.

Purohit, along with the other dignitaries, unveiled an artistically designed brochure and a ‘Do it yourself’ pamphlet, providing citizens with information on how to grow roses at home.

The chief guest praised MC officials for putting up a splendid show, while encouraging citizens to maintain the beauty of the city’s gardens and urging them to create small gardens on terraces or balconies of their homes. He also acknowledged MC gardeners as unsung heroes of the enchanting beauty of the city parks.

Besides display of roses, stalls have been set up by the MC team and the self-help groups to create awareness about products made from construction and demolition waste, horticulture waste products, home composting and products from floral waste.

Besides, the MC has set up a special lost and found counter, a medical counter, water facilities and public conveniences.

To provide reasonably priced food items at the festival venue, the MC has organised a beautiful ‘zero-waste rasoi’. The eco-friendly food court strictly prohibits the use of plastic items and promotes the use of biodegradable and recyclable products.

In his address, the Mayor commended the efforts of the gardeners and officials who made the event vibrant and colourful.

Kirron said the civic body had made efforts to engage citizens of all age groups to participate and enjoy in this annual festival.

The evening saw Sham-e-Gazal with a performance by renowned singer Sunil Singh Dogra and a live performance by Sagar Band.

MP, Mayor have verbal spat

MP Kirron Kher, who is from the BJP, and Mayor Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor, who is from AAP, had a spat during the inauguration of festival. Kirron, in her speech, stated that the Mayor did not mention her name and that he should have followed the protocol. On this, the Mayor said it was his first public event, but the MP had openly embarrassed him.
