Chandigarh, February 21

Two miscreants, including a juvenile, who were involved in bicycle thefts in the city, have been nabbed by the Chandigarh Police. Nine bicycles have been recovered from the suspects.

A spurt in bicycle thefts was witnessed in Sector 38, 40 and 41 on February 18 and 19 when six bicycles were stolen. The police had registered theft cases and initiated an investigation.

A team of the Sector 39 police station, led by Inspector Amanjot Singh, nabbed a 25-year-old youth, identified as Anshul, a resident of Palsora, and a juvenile from near the Sector 56 petrol pump.

The police said nine bicycles, which were stolen from different sectors, were recovered from the duo.

Anshul was a drug addict and took to crime to fulfil his drug needs, the police said. The suspects used to steal bicycles and sell these to people in village areas at cheap rates. “They used to roam in different sectors to look for a new bicycle and make off with it,” said a police official.

Earlier, Anshul was arrested in 2017 in a case of theft registered at the Sector 39 police station.

The police said while the minor boy had been sent to the Juvenile Home, the 25-year-old suspect was produced in a court, which remanded him in one-day police custody.
