Info system will streamline payments at PGI: Director

From one stop Sample Collection Centre to now engaging phlebotomists, the PGI Director, Prof Vivek Lal, has taken a number of initiatives over 48 days of his tenure towards easing patients’ harassment and launching patient-friendly initiatives.

“To ease the rush at the registration counters for visiting doctors at Outpatient Department, payments have been made electronically viable with POS machines. Hospital Information System (HIS) 2.0 is likely to come into effect in six months, which will streamline payments and reduce patient harassment by reducing queues,” shared Prof Lal.

“All operation theatres (OTs) at the Nehru Hospital Extension (NHE) have now become functional after resumption of non-Covid services at the institute. The NHE block of the PGI has been designated as Covid-19 Hospital for almost two years after the pandemic hit the region,” said Prof Lal.

“The waiting area of the trauma centre and Emergency have been made more patient friendly. Regular bi-weekly rounds of the Emergency and critical areas of the PGI are being conducted,” Prof Lal added.

“As the PGI is reeling under the manpower shortage, which adds to burden of doctors, efforts to increase working hands, including nurses and technical staff are on. Recently, a proposal for filling vacant posts has been accepted by the Health Ministry and is being pursued vigorously with the Government of India,” shared Prof Lal.

“The institute is also planning to have phlebotomists to help in the Emergency and wards. On Thursday, a skill lab was also activated to train nurses and residents,” said Dr Lal.

“Phlebotomist is a healthcare worker, who performs phlebotomy in healthcare settings. A phlebotomist usually works in medical offices, clinics and laboratories. His/her job is to assist medical laboratory technologist, doctors and nurses in order to exclusively take care of the blood collection process,” Dr Lal added.

“Besides starting the Central Sample Collection facility at the Nehru Hospital, we are now making multi-level parking a reality as environmental clearance efforts are on,” said Dr Lal.
