In 7 days, cases rise 12% in Mohali

Recovery rate drops, active cases up over 21%

The district has witnessed about 12 per cent increase in Covid cases during the past seven days. The tally has jumped from 31,440 on April 11 to 35,193 today.

There is a 21.73 per cent increase in active cases during the period. From 4,749 active cases on last Sunday, the figure has reached 5,781. In the same period, the recovery rate declined from 83.37 per cent to 82.15 per cent, compounding the problem. The number of persons cured of the disease has increased from 26,214 to 28,913.

Twenty-two persons succumbed to the virus in the district during the past week. While the toll last Sunday was 477, it stood at 499 today.

A random survey of the markets in the city and other places in the district people could be seen moving without masks, thus exposing themselves to the deadly virus despite the fact that the health authorities have been warning people not to venture out without it.

Civil Surgeon Dr Adarshpal Kaur said the sudden spurt in cases was due to the increased testing in the district.

It is pertinent to mention here that the district administration had already doubled the penalty for not wearing a mask and spitting in a public place from Rs500 to Rs1000. Any violation also invites criminal proceedings under the relevant provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and the Indian Penal Code, 1860.


366 sans mask challaned

Mohali: The police challaned 366 persons for not wearing a mask at public places. Fifteen FIRs have been registered against the violators for defying Covid- related guidelines in the past 24 hours. The police said 66 vehicles had been impounded in the district for breaking the night curfew. TNS
