Chandigarh, November 23

A Home Guards volunteer was shot at by a robbery suspect on the road from Tribune Chowk to the Transport light point this evening.

The volunteer, identified as Parkash Singh Negi (40), along with a constable, was patrolling in the area in search of a suspect who had robbed a woman of her jewellery at gunpoint near a forest area in the Industrial Area, Phase I, on November 18.

DSP (East) Udaypal Singh said the patrolling party saw the suspect following which the volunteer nabbed him. However, the suspect, who was armed, shot at the volunteer. The bullet hit the victim’s stomach. The suspect, who was on foot, managed to escape towards Sector 28.

The constable accompanying the volunteer rushed him to the GMCH, Sector 32, where he underwent a surgery. Senior police officials and a team of the crime branch reached the spot and initiated an investigation.

A case has been registered against the suspect at the Industrial Area police station.

“Teams have been constituted to nab the suspect,” said a police official. — TNS
