Chandigarh, January 14

Western Command observed the fifth Tri-Services Veterans’ Day at the Chandimandir Military Station today by paying homage to the soldiers who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

The Veterans’ Day commemorates the beginning of a new era in 1948 when General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of Independent India from the last British Commander-in-Chief, General Francis Roy Butcher.

To commemorate the day, veterans paid tributes at the Veer Smriti war memorial in Chandimandir. Lieutenant General Yogendra Dimri, Chief of Staff, Western Command, laid a wreath at the memorial on behalf of all ranks of the Western Army.

As many as 125 veterans from all three services were present on the occasion. On this day, the Army reaffirmed its commitment towards the veterans and reiterated firm resolve to ensure safety, security and sanctity of the nation and its borders. — TNS
