Haryana's Anjali wins judo gold

Haryana’s Anjali defeated Payal of Madhya Pradesh to win women’s U-40 kg gold medal on the opening day of National Cadet and Sub-Junior Judo Championship at Chandigarh University, Gharuan. In the men’s U-50 kg category, Sagar’s mix of aggressive play helped him to win gold by defeating Lucky. Silambarasan of Tamil Nadu and Kumar Nitin of Uttar Pradesh will fight in the bronze medal match.

As many as 460 players from all 28 states and nine union territories of the country will be participating in the five-day championship.

Speaking after inaugurating the event, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said his government was committed to developing sports culture in Punjab, to eventually restore the glory of the state at national and international levels. He also announced an ultra-modern indoor judo stadium to be constructed in Punjab, and also announced Rs20 lakh as grant to the Punjab Judo Association for promotion of sports in the state.
