The State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) arrested gangster Rajan Bhatti after a brief encounter in Sector 71 here today. Bhatti, a resident of Mustfabad village in Gurdaspur, was nabbed after he was shot in the leg in a high profile area. Out on bail in an arms case, he is said to be a close associate of Canada-based terrorist Lakhbir Singh, alias Landa.

The CCTV footage of the area showed Bhatti driving a BMW through a residential area and stopping near a bend. Close on the heels, a police jeep stopped behind his car after which the gangster tried to run away, but was nabbed by a couple of cops. He was later taken to a hospital. The police refrained from disclosing any information about him.

Sources said while fleeing, the suspect tried to scale the boundary wall between the two houses but got entangled in the barbed wire and suffered inuries in his hand.

A case of criminal conspiracy and under the Arms Act is already registered against him at the SSOC police station in Mohali in 2022.

Sources said the gangster was involved in more than 15 cases, including attempt to murder, drug smuggling and under the Arms Act, in Chandigarh and Punjab. In 2015, Bhatti had escaped from the court during the hearing of a rape case, but was arrested later.
