New Delhi, November 28

Former railway minister and ex-MP from Chandigarh Pawan Kumar Bansal on Saturday was appointed as congress treasurer after the demise of Ahmed Patel.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has approved the appointed, saying the arrangement in interim and Bansal would take the charge immediately to discharge the duties as party treasurer.

Recently, Bansal was made in-charge of administration replacing former General Secretary Motilal Vora.

A confidant of Sonia Gandhi, Bansal has kept a low profile ever, since he was removed as the cabinet minister from the UPA over accusations of his nephew fixing railway posts for bribes.

Bansal was picked as Congress LS nominee in 2014 and 2019, and lost both times to BJP’s Kirron Kher.

Bansal has represented Chandigarh four times.

In 2019, he bagged the Chandigarh LS nomination of Congress despite Navjot Sidhu seeking the same for his wife.
