Mohali, August 5

Under the Mission Tandrust Punjab, the Food Safety Branch of the District Health Department conducted checks in shops at Phase 5 here today.

District Health Officer Subhash Kumar said the team, led by food safety officer Rajdeep Kaur, took two samples of edible oil from a shop. Meanwhile, the food safety team from Delhi, led by Vishal Soni, inspected various shops and collected a total of 20 samples of various pulses.

The team will take the samples to Delhi and test these at its own level. He said on the instructions of Abhinav Trikha, Commissioner, Food and Drugs Administration, Punjab, the special inspection campaign of edible oil had been initiated from August 1, which would continue till August 14.

Subhash said they would test trans fat and other parameters in the edible oil. The team had already collected two samples from Dera Bassi. A total of 10 samples of edible oil would be collected from shops across the district.

He said the drive to check the quality and durability of sweets, especially the “best before date” tag at the container/tray holding sweets, was already going on. He reiterated that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had mandated display of this tag from October 1, 2020.

The District Health Officer said as per the norms, tags must be affixed on the trays in every shop and shopkeepers were already sensitised to this by the Health Department. He asked the shopkeepers not to sell expired products and pay special attention to cleanliness. He said checking was not meant to harass anyone but to ensure that clean and quality food items were made available to people.
