Action sought against telecom firm contractor for damaging cables

Damage caused to underground high-tension lines at the TDI society in Sector 117, allegedly by workers laying Internet optical fibre cable, plunged five sectors here into darkness for about 20 hours.

The office-bearers of the society have complained to the Deputy Commissioner seeking action against the contractor of the telecom company for damaging the high-tension lines, besides putting the lives of people in danger. There was no power supply to Sectors from 116 to 119 and 74-A.

President of TDI Residents Rights Protection and Welfare Society PK Gupta said there was a disruption in the power supply yesterday as a contractor of the telecom company was laying the optical fibre cable. The workers were manually excavating the road berms. In the process, the high tension cables supplying power to many sectors got damaged, he added.

Gupta said they had urged Magnus, the agency hired by the builder, to rectify the fault but its staff said it was a major damage. The power supply was restored around 9.30 am today, but it was still playing hide and seek causing harassment to people, especially the elderly, in this humid conditions.

Gupta urged the DC to order an independent inquiry and register a case against those found guilty.
