Emergency: BJP observes 'Black Day'

The BJP observed “Black Day” today to mark 47 years since the Emergency was imposed in 1975 by the then government.

“It was to apprise the new generation about the incidents that happened during the 21months of Emergency and the atrocities committed by the then government,” said leaders of the BJP.

Ram Vilas Sharma, former Education Minister (Haryana), who was a victim of Emergency, addressed the audience at an event organised by the local unit of the BJP.

Sharma was unlawfully imprisoned for 19 months during Emergency. The event was also attended by city BJP president Arun Sood, Mayor Sarbjit Kaur Dhillon and others.

Describing Emergency as the darkest times, Sharma said Emergency was declared in the country at the midnight of June 25 1975, which lasted till March 21, 1977.

“The Opposition leaders, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Mulayam Singh Yadav, were put in jails. Forced mass sterilisation drives were conducted which were a breach of fundamental rights. The atrocities of the then government gave birth to the Janata Party under the leadership of Morarji Desai,” he recalled.
