Local confectionary and department shops in Mohali markets are having a bumper sale due to Covid-19 panic among residents. Shopkeepers claim that sudden panic among customers has lead to this surplus sale.

Also, there is shortage of wheat flour at majority of shops in Mohali. As per shopkeepers supply of wheat flour was affected due to sudden rise in demand. Residents were buying wheat flour, pulses and other items in large quantities.

Some shopkeepers also claimed that they had witnessed sale even more than Diwali or during other festival season. The sale of department stores in Phases 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 has multiplied due to sudden rush.

Rakesh Kumar, owner of Khubsoorat Super Market at Phase 3B2, said, “Yesterday, our sale broke the Diwali record. Customers are buying food items in bulk.”

Varun, another shopkeeper, who owns Jain Departmental Store, Phase 1, said, “Customers are buying stock for one month. Our sale has gone up by four times this week. There is shortage of wheat flour. Demand might result into higher prices of these food items.”

Vijay Sachdeva, who owns Sachdeva Super Mart at Sector 70, said, “Customers are buying items like they will never get these in future. Our sale has multiplied five times in a week due to rush. Whole supply line of wheat flour is also disturbed due to shortage. Today, we are left with no packets of flour.”

Charanjeet Kaur, a customer from Kharar, said, “I was aware of the situation earlier. That is why I have bought enough stock for my home, which will last for two months.”

“I bought three packets of wheat flour and 10 packets of pulses along with other stock, but our LPG cylinder has not been delivered despite booking. I am worried how will I cook food in absence of gas,” she added.
