Decks have been cleared for the construction of a mother and child care centre at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32 here. The hospital authorities have submitted the duly approved drawing of the centre to the Chief Architect, Department of Urban Planning, UT, for approval.

Sanctioned by the UT Administration last year, the centre will be set up in the K Block of the GMCH-32 at an estimated cost of Rs38 crore.

The UT Administration had approved the construction of an emergency-cum-trauma centre and a mother and child care centre at the GMCH-32 with an estimated cost of Rs52.77 crore and Rs38.06 crore, respectively.

The UT Engineering Department had recently floated tenders for the construction of the 200-bed emergency-cum-trauma centre in front of the existing Emergency. However, the work on the 348-bed mother and child care centre could not be started as the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the GMCH-32 had raised some objections over the design of the centre.

A senior official of the GMCH-32 said the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology had made some changes in the design of the centre and the same had been submitted to the Department of Urban Planning for approval.

After getting approval from the Chief Architect, the Engineering Department would float tenders for the construction of the centre, he said.

With the construction of the twin projects, the GMCH-32 will get a major boost in healthcare facilities, which will benefits patients from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and other states.
