Chandigarh, July 23

A large number of dead fish were found in a choe near Kishangarh, close to the regulator end of Sukhna Lake, today.

A common phenomenon

There is no need to get scared. It is a common phenomenon. During heavy rain in this part, dead fish are found due to dirty water. Also, some fish get stuck in muddy water and die when the floodgates of the lake are opened — Dr Kanwarjit, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry

When a foul smell filled the area in the morning, passers-by called up the police. Officials of the forest and animal husbandry departments swung into action.

The Joint Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Dr Kanwarjit, said during the rains, a lot of silt and muddy water flowed into the lake, which resulted in less oxygen in the water body. “This is believed to be the reason behind the death of fish. However, the Forest Department has collected the samples of dead fish for further examination, so that the exact cause of their death can be ascertained,” he added.

He said a team of the forest and animal husbandry departments had removed the dead fish and would bury them. The dead fish were found at the spot during monsoon earlier as well. “There is no need to get scared. It is a common phenomenon. During heavy rain in this part, dead fish are found due to dirty water. Also, some fish get stuck in muddy water and die when the floodgates of the lake are opened,” said the official.
