Covid protocol given the go-by at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh

A possible third wave of Covid-19 could take place as people are not wearing mask and maintaining social distancing in the city. Though the UT Administration has failed to ensure the compliance of the Covid protocol at Sukhna Lake, the authorities today allowed boating in the lake with 50 per cent capacity.

Amanjeet Singh, a resident of Sector 5, said the Administration should not allow residents to lower the guard as it would invite a possible third wave of the pandemic because the devastating second wave was yet to fizzle out.

To prevent the impending third wave, the entire city was needed to be vaccinated and till then, residents or visitors need to follow the Covid-appropriate behaviour strictly, he said, and added that the Administration should restrict the entry of people at crowded places such as Sukhna Lake and the Sector 26 fruit and vegetable market, where people could be seen violating the Covid protocol.

Expressing similar views, LR Budaniya, a social activist, said people going for routine work would not trigger a third wave of the pandemic, but those not wearing a mask or observing social distancing could cause it.

Nobody could foretell the possible arrival of the third wave, but by following Covid-appropriate behaviour, its impact could be reduced considerably, he said. Budaniya added that the second wave of the virus had hit the country hard and residents should step out of their houses only when necessary so as to avoid another wave of the deadly virus.

Meanwhile, UT Administrator VP Singh Bandore has directed the Director General of Police to take strict action against the violators of Covid protocol, particularly those not wearing a mask, at Sukhna Lake and other public places.
