Councillors walk out of Zirakpur MC House meet

The house meeting of the Zirakpur Municipal Council on Thursday turned out to be a stormy affair as many councillors left the meeting midway. Even in the absence of many councillors, resolutions on 17 agendas were made during the meeting. The meeting was held after over three months.

No new road has been constructed in the city for years, and the already constructed ones have not been repaired for a long time. Parks in the city are in poor condition due to a lack of maintenance. During the meeting, the SAD councillors raised slogans and walked out. They accused the Punjab Government and Municipal Council president, Udayvir Singh Dhillon, of their lackadaisical attitude towards developmental work in the city.

After six SAD councillors walked out of the meeting, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party councillors continued the proceedings of the meeting, and several resolutions were passed unanimously. A resolution was passed to set up a new sub-fire station near Dhakoli Gate. During the meeting, the problem of stray cattle in the city was also discussed, and the councillors decided to operationalize private cowsheds in the city. The councillors also made the decision to pay Rs 50 per cow to the private cowsheds in the city.

Resolutions regarding increasing the cost of cremation of unclaimed bodies from Rs 4,000 to Rs 4,500, registration of pet dogs, and installation of a sewage treatment plant at Sanoli village were passed in the meeting.

On the other hand, SAD councillor Dharminder Sharma, who walked out of the meeting, said the development work has been stalled in the city for a long time. He said, "No new road has been constructed in the city for years, and the already constructed roads have not been repaired for a long time. Parks in the city are in poor condition due to a lack of maintenance. Non-functional streetlights in the city have been causing a lot of inconvenience to commuters in the city.”
