Congress wins Zirakpur, Dera Bassi, Lalru MC polls

Congress won in 23 out of the 31 wards in Zirakpur. The SAD managed to register win in eight wards. The BJP and the AAP failed to open their account

Zirakpur, February 17

The Congress emerged victorious in Zirakpur, Dera Bassi and Lalru by a handsome margin in the municipal council elections results declared here today.

Congress won in 23 out of the 31 wards in Zirakpur. The SAD managed to register win in eight wards. The BJP and the AAP failed to open their account.

In Dera Bassi, Congress won in 13 out of the 19 wards. Independent candidates won in three wards, the SAD in two and the BJP got one. The AAP failed to register a win here.

In Lalru, Congress won in 12 of the 17 wards. Three independent candidates registered wins here. The SAD managed to win in two wards. The BJP and the AAP failed to open their account here as well.

Among the prominent candidates, Congress candidate from Zirakpur Ward No. 18 Udayvir Singh Dhillon defeated Dilbagh Singh of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) by 389 votes.

Udayvir, son of Dera Bassi Congress in-charge Deepinder Singh Dhillon, was contesting the MC elections for the first time.

SAD’s Dharminder Sharma from Ward No. 18 and Yadvinder Sharma from Ward No. 22 — both brothers of Dera Bassi MLA NK Sharma — also registered comprehensive wins over their nearest rivals.

However, SAD’s Kulwinder Sohi, former president of Zirakpur municipal council, lost to the Congress candidate by more than 600 votes in Ward No. 4.

Results of Kurali MC elections.

SAD’s Jagdev won over the Congress candidate Harsh Rishi by a slender margin of five votes (421-416) in ward No. 10. NOTA polled 13 votes in this ward.

Another SAD candidate, Jaswinder Kaur, beat Congress Paramjit Kaur by five votes in ward No.1 of Dera Bassi.
