Chandigarh sees 40% spurt in weekly Covid infections

Chandigarh, July 25

The city has seen a spurt in Covid-19 cases, registering a 40 per cent growth over the past week. As many as 734 cases were recorded this week, against 524 seen in the previous week.

The daily positivity rate stands at 9.96%, while the weekly positivity rate is hovering at 8.81% in the city. The active caseload has risen to 762 cases.

The hospitalisation has also increased to 32 patients in the city, while the remaining are under home isolation. The PGIMER is treating 12 patients in its Covid ward, while 10 patients are admitted to the GMCH-32 and nine at GMSH-16.

Chandigarh’s Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr Suman Singh said: “We are conducting genome sequencing of random samples twice a month and so far, Omicron is the only circulating variant in the city.” Dr Sanjeev Palta from the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, GMCH-32, said: “The patients currently on ventilator support in ICU wards are those with comorbidities who require additional care. There is no change in the symptoms as the patients are reporting common fever and muscle ache.”

Dr PVM Lakshmi from the Department of Community Medicine, PGIMER, said: “Most are cases of reinfection as there is no cross-immunity in this variant. The real concern will be if there is a sudden increase in the severity of cases, which is not happening currently.”

“The Covid virus has mutated well and established its presence in the community. We only need to continue with the genomic surveillance so that we get wary of new variant, if any,” added Dr Lakshmi.

The city has so far vaccinated only 7.74% of the city population with the booster dose. Around 24% children in the age group of 12-14 years still await their first dose of Corbevax and only 45.33% have taken the second dose.

74 test +ve in Mohali dist

Mohali: As many as 74 persons tested positive for Covid during the past 24 hours, taking the tally to 98,312, while 45 patients were cured of the disease. However, no fresh death was reported on Monday. Of the total 98,312 positive cases, 96,494 patients have been cured of the disease. There are 659 active cases in the district. The toll stands at 1,159. —TNS

UT sees 81 fresh Covid-19 cases

Chandigarh: The city witnessed 81 fresh Covid cases on Monday. While there was no fresh fatality, 53 patients recovered from the disease. The virus has claimed 1,165 lives in the city so far. — TNS

47 contract virus in Panchkula

Panchkula: A total of 47 fresh Covid cases were reported from the district during the past 24 hours, taking the tally to 46,239. However, no fresh death was reported on Monday. Of the total 46,239 positive cases, 45,573 patients have been cured of the disease. There are 250 active cases in the district. The toll stands at 416. —TNS
