Mohali, July 29

Hours after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann supervised the government drive to take possession of 2,828 acres of land worth Rs 350 crore in Majri Block, irate residents resorted to sloganeering and tried to stop the police from moving forward. However, the situation was resolved after tempers ran high.

Representatives of Simranjit Singh Mann’s party SAD (A) reached the spot and said, “There is no land in the name of the MP’s siblings here. There is no question of encroachment.”

Residents of Chhoti Badi Naggal later raised slogans against the government and had a minor scuffle with the police force led by SP (Rural) Navreet Singh Virk.

Heavy police force was present at the spot with angry residents, including women, resenting the government action. Administration officials had a tough time negotiating with the residents who had also gathered a mound of stones on the road. Cops tried to tackle the situation by asking five-six members of the aggrieved party to talk to the officials and resolve the matter.

The Punjab CM had earlier said that only the influential people, who had occupied the land illegally, were being removed, adding that no tiller of land or poor person who was living there or earning his bread from there was being displaced. — TNS
