Chandigarh, December 1

The new outpatient department (OPD) at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), South Campus, Sector 48, got operational today with 12 patients visiting the facility for consultation.

Yashpal Garg, Secretary Health-cum-Secretary Medical Education & Research, in the presence of ward councillor Rajinder Kumar Sharma, GMCH Director-Principal Prof Jasbinder Kaur, GMCH Medical Superintendent Prof Sudhir Garg and representatives of the Resident Welfare Associations attended the opening ceremony.

Garg said the administration as well as GMCH would provide accessible and quality healthcare to residents. “Opening of OPDs is another step towards providing better facilities to city residents. The arrangements will be reviewed at regular intervals and improved further,” said Garg.

He underscored the benefits of getting an Ayushman Bharat health ID. Besides ease of availing of health services, it allowed portability of electronic health records all over India in a secure manner.

Prof Jasbinder Kaur said the services would be improved in the coming days after taking feedback from residents. The OPDs are being manned by consultants and residents from respective departments.

The need for a health facility for southern sectors was raised by councillor Sharma with the UT Adviser during an Advisory Council meeting. The GMCH authorities were subsequently directed to start OPD services in Sector 48.

It was decided that four departments (general medicine, general surgery, paediatrics and orthopaedics) would start their OPD services. In addition, departments of dermatology, radiation oncology, tuberculosis and respiratory medicine and Psychiatry will run their follow-up OPDs.

Welcoming the setting up of OPDs, residents have demanded introduction of other services and more pharmacy shops and canteens.

At present, the campus has indoor admission wards of four departments — psychiatry, dermatology, oncology and radiology, and tuberculosis and respiratory medicine.

During the pandemic, the hospital was converted into a dedicated Covid centre to admit and isolate infected patients.
