Chandigarh, September 15

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has invited suggestions and objections from public regarding the Chandigarh Plastic Waste Management Bylaws-2020 till September 25.

On July 28 this year, the Municipal Corporation published a draft notification of the Chandigarh Plastic Waste Management Bylaws-2020.

Among the key points in the draft are that individual household and institutional waste generators will take steps to minimise the generation of plastic waste and segregate plastic waste at source.

The draft bylaws also state that institutional generators of plastic waste will segregate and store generated waste in accordance with the Social Waste Management Rules 2016.

Under the heading segregation, collection and storage of plastic waste of the bylaws, it is written that bulk generators of solid waste such as shopping malls, cinema halls, hotels and institutions will be encouraged to initiate and undertake special drives and programmes to promote segregated waste collections.

On September 27, 2019, the Environment Department, UT, had banned single-use plastic in the city. Under the ban, no person, including a shopkeeper, vendor, wholesaler or retailer, trader and hawker, could manufacture, store, import, sell, transport, supply or use plastic, thermocol and Styrofoam items.

Almost one year after, the Administration has not been able to enforce the ban completely.
