Chandigarh imposes 5% Covid cess on liquor

The UT Administration has imposed 5 per cent Covid cess on all categories of liquor sold through wholesale licensees with immediate effect on the MRP in the city.

The cess will be collected and remitted to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation by the Excise and Taxation Department. “The cess will be kept in a separate account till a clarification is received on this from the Ministry of Home Affairs,” said an official.

Earlier this month, the Administration had imposed cow cess for the extended period of the excise policy for 2019-20 (from May 16 to June 30). The cess was levied at the rate of Rs 5 per bottle of 750 ml of country liquor, Rs 5 per bottle of 650 ml of beer and Rs 10 per bottle of 750 ml of whisky.
